Everything you need to know about Bolus, from getting started to making the most of your revision.

General Questions

What is Bolus?
Bolus is a comprehensive question bank designed specifically for FRCEM SBA preparation. We provide original, non-AI generated MCQ SBA questions written by FRCEM-qualified emergency physicians, with detailed explanations and references.
Which exams is Bolus suitable for?
Bolus is primarily designed for the FRCEM SBA (Royal College of Emergency Medicine). Because its questions test core emergency medicine knowledge in the Single Best Answer format, it is also a useful resource for other emergency medicine membership and board examinations that use a similar format.
Who writes the questions?
All questions are written by qualified emergency physicians who have successfully passed their FRCEM exams. Each question is reviewed by at least one other question writer to ensure consistency and accuracy before it is published on the question bank.
Can I use Bolus on my phone or tablet?
Yes! Bolus is fully optimised for mobile and tablet use, making it easy to practice questions between cases or on the go. Mock mode works best on desktop/laptop to better simulate exam conditions.
How many questions does Bolus have?
Bolus has over 900 original Single Best Answer questions covering the breadth of the FRCEM SBA curriculum, with new questions added regularly. Every question is written and peer-reviewed by FRCEM-qualified emergency physicians.
Does Bolus include revision notes?
Yes. Bolus includes over 100 quick reference articles covering high-yield topics. These are concise summaries of key information attached to question explanations, designed for rapid revision of the most important concepts.
How much does Bolus cost?
Bolus costs £49 for 3 months of full access to 1000+ original SBA questions, mock exams, detailed referenced explanations, and full progress tracking.

Content & Quality

Are the questions up-to-date with current guidelines?
Yes, we regularly review and update our questions to reflect current RCEM, NICE, and Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
Do questions include explanations?
Every question comes with a full, referenced explanation to help you understand the correct answer and the reasoning behind it.
Which guidelines are the questions based on?
Our questions are referenced to the RCEM curriculum and widely used national guidance, including NICE guidelines and Resuscitation Council UK guidance. Where applicable, questions reference multiple guidelines.
What topics does Bolus cover?
Bolus covers the breadth of the RCEM curriculum including resuscitation, cardiology, respiratory, trauma and orthopaedics, paediatric emergencies, toxicology, sepsis and infection, neurology, environmental emergencies, and acute presentations across all body systems.
Is Bolus better than using AI-generated questions?
Yes. All Bolus questions are written by qualified emergency physicians who have passed their FRCEM exams, not generated by AI. This ensures clinical accuracy, appropriate difficulty level, and questions that reflect real exam style. AI-generated medical questions often contain factual errors or clinically implausible scenarios.
What if I disagree with an answer?
We encourage feedback! Use the "Report an Issue" link in the question explanation to let us know if you disagree with an answer or spot an error. We aim to respond promptly, either correcting the issue or explaining our reasoning.
How do I report a problem with a question?
Click the "Report an Issue" link in the question explanation, whether you've found a spelling mistake or disagree with the answer. We welcome all feedback to maintain question quality.

Using Bolus

What's the difference between Question Mode and Mock Mode?
Question Mode lets you practice at your own pace with immediate feedback after each question. It's perfect for learning and focused topic revision.

Mock Mode simulates the real exam format. You answer all of the questions before seeing any results, helping you build exam stamina and assess your readiness. We recommend using it in exam conditions and timing yourself.
Can I focus on specific topics?
Yes! You can select specific topics for focused practice. By default, all topics are selected, but you can customise this in the topic selection menu.
How do I track my progress?
Summary statistics are available showing your overall progress on the menu page. You can also review detailed statistics by topic on the Statistics page.
Can I reset my progress and start again?
Yes, you can reset your progress on the Statistics page. This allows you to re-answer all questions. Previous attempts are saved and persist in your statistics.
Can I tell how hard questions are?
Questions are rated based on how other users have answered them. "Below average" = easiest third, "average" = middle third, "above average" = hardest third. Questions need a minimum number of attempts before they're included in this system.
How do I go back to review questions I found difficult?
You can flag difficult questions for later review. Access them via the Flagged Questions page where you can review, re-attempt, or unflag them.
Can I save my progress in Mock Mode?
Yes, your progress is automatically saved if you need to stop partway through. However, we recommend completing mocks in one sitting, ideally under exam conditions, to best simulate the real experience.
Can I review my previous mock tests?
Yes, your most recent mock test remains available for review. Use the "Review last mock test" option to go back through your answers and explanations.
What is Q10 mode?
Q10 is a quick-fire 10-question mode designed for revision on the go. It's perfect for squeezing in practice between cases or on a break, covering random or topic-specific questions with immediate feedback.
Does Bolus have pre-made mock exams?
Yes. Bolus offers curated mock papers carefully designed to mirror the topic distribution and difficulty level of the actual FRCEM SBA exam, with more on the way. You can also build custom mocks choosing your own number of questions and topics.
